of 5:20: “But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” The apostle’s statement might be misinterpreted to mean that God is somehow bound to bestow more grace while we remain willfully in the state of sin. Paul’s answer to the question “Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?” is that the justified person cannot “continue in sin” because he has “died to sin” (v. 2).
